He is going, He is staying, He is painting….wait…what?

by DFE

The Brek Shea transfer saga took another turn Monday night, as FC Dallas released a statement confirming the 22-year-old was traveling to Europe, but didn’t specify where he was going.

We have received interest from a number of European clubs regarding Brek Shea,” the statement read. “Brek is traveling there this evening and, as a result, he will not be in attendance at training tomorrow. Currently, there is no deal in place with any club and we have no further details at this time.”

Shea had been subject of a bid from Premier League side Stoke last week, but with MLS reportedly killing the deal after FCD and Stoke agreed upon a fee, it appeared that Shea would stay in MLS for the time being.

With the new development, it would appear that either Stoke has come back with an improved offer, or there is a mystery team that has swooped in. There will surely be more to come on this story in the coming days.

USA vs. RUSSIA

by DFE

By: Joey McCune

2-2. How the hell did that happen?!

It seems that the good ole US of A has miraculously pulled another result out of nothing. And although we’ve drawn with the number 9 team in the world, this match showed us more than we’d like to see in terms of problems. I most likely will never be the coach of the national team, but I’m going to take a crack at our most glaring issues and how to fix them. I’ll mostly talk about guys that were in the squad against Russia, but I’ll mention a few others as well. If you don’t like profanity, I don’t know what to tell you. Grab a beer and get comfy.

Manager:

We start at the head of the snake. Jürgen Klinsmann. Anyone who watched the Russia match would be hard pressed to say that Klinsy sent out a team that he thought could pull an upset. If anything he came into this match expecting a loss. In my eyes this is unacceptable. You are the national team coach of the United States of America!! You can’t go into a match scared!! We have the talent to beat any team on any day if used properly. Klinsmann has got to first figure out who is best XI are, and he needs to figure out a base formation that he can then work off of depending on game situations. The Russia game saw the US line up in what was either a very defensive 4-5-1 or an ineffective 4-1-4-1, that saw Jones and Bradley going forward into attack. I understand that it’s just a friendly and he can experiment, but we’ve run a different system almost every game. Players are successful when they know their role on the pitch and it’s not changing from game to game. I could go on for longer but this is making my blood pressure spike. Long story short, Jürgen needs to come in to games headstrong and confident in his team; he also needs to look at the national pool and pick a formation that he can then plug in his best XI.

Goalkeeper:

Tim Howard has saved our ass more than America saved the French during WWII. Plain and simple. No matter what happens at club level, when he pulls on that US shirt the man is a monster. It is hard to find many negatives in Timmy’s game, which is a major plus for the national team. But, what the hell do we do if he gets hurt?! Rimando, Johnson, Guzan. Those are the first three that come to mind, in no particular order. I can’t honestly say that I am comfortable with the health of our net at the international level with those men between the pipes. While Tim is a legend, we need to find a number two ASAP.

Defense:

Jesus Christ. I don’t know dude. It’s bad. Like really bad. This one has to be split into two categories, center backs and full backs.

Full backs:

This one is easier so I’ll take it on first. We’ve tried out a lot of players at left back, while Cherundolo has had a monopoly on the right for quite some time. If Cherundolo makes it to Brazil as our starting right back I will be shocked. He’s 33 right now, and still a year and half out from the World Cup. Nobody wants a 35 year old full back starting for their country at the World Cup!! I think that Timmy Chandler needs to take over the reins on the right side and bring Dolo as a vet on the bench. Chandler is only 22 and has been playing at the top level in Germany for years! He’s athletic, he gets forward when needed, and he’s not 35 freaking years old. Left back, this one has been an issue for a while. I like Fabian Johnson. He’s naturally right footed, but his weak foot is good enough that it isn’t too much of an issue when it comes to crossing on the run. Left back is going to be a rough one until someone makes a huge break through.

Center back:

Clarence Goodson is a worse center back than me, and I’m 5’7” with a bad knee. He deserves no more call ups, plain and simple. So who should be our CBs? Boca is the brains of the back 4. It’s shockingly evident, especially when he’s not in the game (see Goodson, Clarence). Carlos suffers from the same problem that Cherundolo does though, as he is also 33. Time is definitely not on his side, but he keeps himself fit so it may not be much of an issue. Boca’s brains make up for what he lacks in pace and leaping ability. Now who the hell can we plug in next to him? Not Clarence Goodson, what a piece of shit that guy is. I think it’s high time that we start seeing a lot more of George John, Omar Gonzales, Matt Hedges, and the somehow forgotten Jay DeMerit.  GJ, Omar, and Hedges are all quality center backs, but Gonzales is the only one to have been capped (2 times). Think about all the guys they’ve plugged in, and George John has zero (that’s the same as none) caps. The next few games should involve these three guys. Now for the other man that I mentioned. Jay fucking DeMerit. What more do you want me to say about the guy?! Determination, grit, athleticism, brains, and a bad ass mullet (R.I.P.), he’s got what you want in a center back. And should Boca be hurt, I can think of no better replacement than someone that has played the position at the highest level and been successful. Time may not be on his side, but I think he could easily make it to Brazil and play a major part. I’ve left out any comments on Geoff Cameron because, let’s face it, he used to play for Houston and they don’t count as actual people.

Midfield:

Michael Bradley all day long. No matter what, he is in the starting XI. The guy is the engine to the US squad when used correctly. He plays smart passes, he scores, and he covers every blade of grass between the boxes. Jermaine Jones needs to just go away. He’s a liability. Every time he ventures forward he ends up on the ground, and then takes 20 minutes to get back up, and if he’s playing defense everyone expects him to be carded. No more of him please. Danny Williams has done pretty well in my eyes. He sits just in front of the back four and slows down attacks good enough that I think he keeps his place. Sacha Kljestan, what a dick! If anyone can explain what he adds to the team I’d love to hear it, because I don’t see a damn thing (aside from looking like Euro trash). Mo Edu I think still has something to add to the team. For me he is best as a holding mid, someone to bring on when you need to close out a game.  We have a lot of depth in the middle of the park, Jürgen just needs to figure out how to plug them in, and three defensive midfielders on at the same time isn’t the way to go moving forward.

Forwards:

Jozy Altidore had a good game today. There I said it. If you disagree with me then you are just letting your left over hatred from his last game float over to this one. Jozy was the lone striker today, don’t let Herculez Gomez’s name on the team sheet fool you, Jozy was alone. Aside from that, he had zero service. NONE! Was his second half worse than his first? Yes, but he worked harder in this game than I’ve ever seen him do previously. He tried very hard to find the game by dropping deep or floating wide, even coming back into our defensive third and earning a free kick then sprinting back into the attacking third. He didn’t score and I account that to lack of service. Hard to score if you aren’t given the ball in opportunistic positions. I don’t think that it is time to give up on Jozy yet, I think Klinsy needs to give him someone to work with. Insert Herculez Gomez and Terrance Boyd. Herc was simply used wrong today. He’s not a winger, never will be. He’s best up top causing problems for center backs with his constant movement and work rate. The movement of Gomez creates space for his strike partner, if Klinsmann would give him one. Terrance Boyd is as green as green can be. But he’s got something, something that we haven’t seen in a while. He’s big, he’s fast, he holds the ball up fairly well and I love that he is comfortable with his back to the goal. We’ve lacked that in attack for a long time. Jury is still out, but he could be damn good. Agudelo is another young guy that I think is still trying to settle and find his style. I thought he’d start to grow in New York being able to play with Henry, and then they brought in 50 strikers and traded him to (shithole) Chivas. Agudelo still has a lot to show and is still very young. Of these four, Herc is the old man at 30. The next oldest? Jozy Altidore at 23. If you give this group time and opportunity we will have something special.

As for the young guns we saw today, Gatt and Diskerud, they had a decent first game. Josh Gatt has been someone that I’ve been raving about for months. He’s fast, he can cross, he knows when to come inside, and he is extremely confident on the ball. Keep your eye on this one, could be the future on the right wing. Mix Diskerud played competently when he came on. Let’s not get all crazy just because he scored on his debut. We need to see him for more than 20-30 minutes to really get a feel for this guy. If you want more Josh Gatt goodness by the way, go on YouTube and put on your party hat.

Now going forward we need to see what happens when Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan return to the squad together. No matter how good we are with one, we are better with both! The Hexagonal match ups will show whether or not Klinsmann will address our problems and if he is willing to continue to cap young, exciting players.

USMNT: A Starting XI to Get Excited About

by DFE

BY: John D. Halloran

Coming off the September and October World Cup qualifiers, the USMNT lineup is finally beginning to solidify with a preferred starting XI of Howard, Cherundolo, Cameron, Bocanegra, F. Johnson, Williams, Bradley, E. Johnson, Zusi, Dempsey and Gomez emerging.

However, the lineup still has a number of weaknesses, particularly at center back. So, looking forward, which players could begin to push themselves into the starting XI?

Here’s 11 Americans USMNT fans can get excited about (arranged in a 4-3-3).

Goalkeeper: TBD

Not exactly a brave choice to start off the list, right?

The problem (which is actually a good thing) is there are a number of good choices here. The obvious one is Brad Guzan, who at 28, is still a relative youngster for a goalkeeper.

There is also Luis Robles who is enjoying a resurgence with the New York Red Bulls and there are the obvious prospects in Sean Johnson and Bill Hamid.

Some other, less prominent options would be Cody Cropper, who is only 19, but recently signed with Southampton and Steve Clark, a 26 year old who plies his trade with Honefoss in Norway.

Right back: Eric Lichaj

Lichaj’s performances with Aston Villa as of late have left something to be desired, but he is still currently the best young right back in the USMNT player pool.

Lichaj has good speed, a willingness to battle (sometimes too much), plays against some of the best competition in the world on a weekly basis in the EPL and has proved he can get it done internationally (at least in CONCACAF) through his play in the 2011 Gold Cup.

Center back: Omar Gonzalez

Gonzalez has been at the heart of the turnaround of the LA Galaxy’s season this year as the team was struggling early in the year as Gonzalez was making his recovery from ACL surgery (Thank you again for that Timmy Chandler).

Gonzalez is physically imposing at 6’ 5” and young at only 24 years of age. He has also proven that he can play against the more direct/speedy type of competition most prevalent in CONCACAF because he does it on a weekly basis in MLS.

The next step for Gonzalez is to prove he can get it done at the international level.

Center back: John Anthony Brooks

Brooks is one of the best defensive prospects the USMNT has had in years.

At 6’ 7” and only 19 years of age, Brooks is beginning to become a regular starter for Hertha Berlin in second-division of the Bundesliga.

While some might criticize the fact that Brooks is not playing in the top division, neither are Carlos Bocanegra or Tim Ream. And a pretty strong argument could be made that the second-division in Germany is at least as strong as the Danish league, the home of current second-choice center back Clarence Goodson.

Brooks is one of many potential American players who hold dual nationality and Brooks recently participated in a U-20 camp for Germany. Hopefully, he picks the U.S.

Left back: Fabian Johnson

Despite Johnson only having nine caps for the USMNT, at 24 years of age, Johnson is just starting to hit his prime and should be able to provide the U.S. with years of service.

He continues to be a regular part of Hoffenheim’s lineup and is a big part of both Hoffenheim’s and the USMNT’s attack out of the back.

Holding midfielder: Danny Williams

If you missed Williams interview with CNN last week, you need to check it out.

Williams has proved his worth to the USMNT, especially since he was moved to his natural holding midfielder position against Jamaica in September.

Williams has also won a regular starting role with Hoffenheim, something which will undoubtedly help him continue to develop.

Center midfielder: Michael Bradley

Where have all the cries of nepotism gone?

When he was younger, and his dad was the manager, plenty of USMNT unfairly accused Michael Bradley of only being included in the U.S. lineup because his dad was the coach.

I was never among that group, always loving Bradley’s competitive temperament and appreciating his ability to build the U.S. attack out of the back, especially with his back to pressure.

Now, a year into his club career in Italy, Bradley has become a world-class midfielder.

Center midfielder: Mix Diskerud

Since emerging on the USMNT scene in a friendly against South Africa in 2010, Diskerud has been at or near the top of any list of American prospects.

More recently, Mix was a key part of the U.S.’ U-23 team in Olympic qualifying and has made a move to Rosenborg in the Norwegian league where he has established himself as an important part of their midfield.

Another call-up to the full national team should be on the cards sooner rather than later.

Forward: Josh Gatt

While Gatt is not a natural forward, he could easily play as one of the outside forwards in a 4-3-3 where he would function primarily as a winger.

Gatt has become one of the most anticipated Americans that USMNT fans want to see on the national team and although he received a call-up for the September qualifiers, he was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The 21-year-old Gatt, who plies his trade with Molde in Norway, will certainly see the field very soon for the USMNT.

Forward: Juan Agudelo

Agudelo’s national team presence has faded since Jurgen Klinsmann took over the squad, but much of that has to do with the torn meniscus Agudelo suffered while on duty with the U-23 squad in March.

His club form hasn’t exactly helped, as Agudelo only scored five times this season with Chivas USA.

It’s important, however, to remember that Agudelo is only 19 and anyone who has seen his goals with the USMNT and his former club the New York Red Bulls knows he has talent coming out his ears.

Forward: Terrence Boyd

Boyd offers the USMNT a skill set that few others in the pool can match. At 6’ and 180 lbs., Boyd is a physical specimen. His ability to get on the end of services into the box is fantastic, he is strong in the air, has a terrific work rate and loves playing for the U.S.

He is everything you want in a center forward.

FC DALLAS WAIVES FOUR, EXTENDS CONTRACT FOR SANCHEZ

by DFE

By: Sean Miller

YIKES – not a good day for two homegrown FC Dallas players:

FC DALLAS WAIVES FOUR, EXTENDS CONTRACT FOR SANCHEZ

FC Dallas completed five transactions recently, waiving Bryan Leyva, Bruno Guarda, Ruben Luna and Matias Jara. The club also extended the contract of Homegrown goalkeeper Richard Sanchez through the end of the 2015 season.

The waived players will become available via waiver draft in December following MLS Cup, once the roster changes become official.

After signing with FC Dallas on Feb. 18, 2011, Sanchez went on to become the first American-born FIFA U-17 World Cup Champion. The sixth Homegrown player in FC Dallas history, Sanchez backstopped the Mexican Under-17 National Team to a 2-0 victory over Uruguay in front of a packed house at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on July 10, 2011. The 18-year-old served as FC Dallas’ backup goalkeeper for six MLS matches in 2012. He also logged 360 minutes with the FC Dallas Reserves this season, conceding six goals and finishing with a 3-1-1 record. Sanchez was called in to represent the Mexican Under-20 National Team three times in 2012.

Leyva joined the professional ranks in 2009 as FC Dallas’ first Homegrown signing. Since then, the young Texas native has played nine games, eight of those in 2012. He started and played 69 minutes in a 2011 friendly versus Tigres, recording one assist. His greatest contributions came in the MLS Reserve League in which Leyva scored seven goals and tallied one assist in two seasons.

Luna signed with FC Dallas as a Homegrown player on July 30, 2010. Since then, Luna has appeared in 22 games and scored two goals. He led the MLS Reserve League in goals with 10 during 2011 and led FC Dallas in goals scored during CONCACAF Champions League that same season.

The contracts of both Homegrown players expired following the 2012 season and FC Dallas elected not to renew either player. However, the team will continue to support the two Academy graduates as they pursue the next opportunities in their careers.

FC Dallas acquired Guarda in a trade with the Colorado Rapids on July 28, 2008. The Brazilian midfielder played for head coach Schellas Hyndman at SMU, where he was a two-time Hermann Trophy semifinalist. In nearly five seasons with the club, Guarda appeared in 40 games, starting 19, scoring one goal and tallying three assists in MLS play. He appeared in 12 games making nine starts in 2008 and appeared in 11 games with five starts in 2011. This season, Guarda made four appearances and started one match.

Argentine striker Matias Jara signed with FC Dallas in August 2012. Jara joined the club from Argentine second division side Guillermo Brown. He did not appear in any matches with the FC Dallas first team.

BRING ON THE HEX

by DFE

By: Sean Miller

How can you describe as tough a draw that only determines when and where you play, not whom do you play?

Well, FIFA conducted the Hexagonal draw Wednesday night in Miami, Beach, Fla., and the United States will open against Honduras, Costa Rica and Mexico — the three teams in the six-team qualifying group that have played in the World Cup in the last two finals — as well as open and close on the road.

The USA, which is seeking to reach the World Cup finals for the seventh straight time, will open the final round of World Cup 2014 qualifying in the Concacaf zone Feb. 6 at Honduras, where it clinched its berth at the 2010 World Cup with a 3-2 win.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s team will also play Costa Rica and Mexico in back-to-back games. It will host the Ticos on March 22 and then travel to Mexico, where it has never won a qualifier, four days later.

The only team that might have a tougher draw is Costa Rica, which opens at Panama and the USA and then finishes up against Mexico at home.

If the USA is looking for a good omen, its home matches against Mexico and Jamaica will take place in the same slots that it beat them at home to clinch its berth in the 2006 World Cup and 2002 World Cup, respectively.

The U.S. draw:
Feb. 6: at Honduras
March 22: vs. Costa Rica
March 26: at Mexico
June 7: at Jamaica
June 11: vs. Panama
June 18: vs. Honduras
Sept. 6: at Costa Rica
Sept. 10: vs. Mexico
Oct. 11: vs. Jamaica
Oct. 15: at Panama
