FCD draw with Portland

FC Dallas and the Portland Timbers both came into their matchup riding seven-match unbeaten streaks. And after a 90-minute tussle, both teams walked away with their streaks intact.

The clubs battled to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at FC Dallas Stadium to bring each team’s unbeaten streak to eight games. A Kenny Cooper penalty kick goal tied up the match just seven minutes after Darlington Nagbe put the visitors ahead in the 70th minute.

Cooper’s penalty kick came after Andrew Jean-Baptiste was given a yellow card for fouling Blas Perez in the box. While the ball never came close to Jean-Baptiste and Perez, referee Juan Guzman didn’t hesitate and pointed to the spot. Cooper gave Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts little chance as he put the spot-kick in the side netting.

Timbers head coach Caleb Porter was clearly not happy with the call and felt it cost his team the win.

“It’s a real travesty the way that game played out. It’s hard to win a game when you’re playing against 12 men. For me, that’s just unfair, completely unfair. I’m not going to criticize anyone specifically, but that’s just unacceptable – an off-the-ball call where two guys get tangled. I mean, there were 20 other plays in the game that were just like that exact one that could have been called in both boxes,” Porter said. “Again, I think it’s just an absolute travesty.”

While Jean-Baptiste admitted that he might have tugged Perez, he also believed that Guzman shouldn’t have pointed to the spot.

“The referee felt I drug him down. I felt like he was tugging on me, I was tugging on him and it was really going both ways,” the second-year defender said. “I feel I let my team down with a lack of focus and the referee gave them a gift.”

The game was a back-and-fourth affair that one might expect from two top teams. Portland’s midifield pairing of Will Johnson and Diego Chara were all over the field while David Ferreira and Fabian Castillo were able to find pockets of space for FC Dallas. Chara’s track-back tackle on Ferreira after covering 50 yards of field was an example of not only Chara’s good work, but also evidence of spotty play from the Timbers  centerback combination of Futty Danso and Jean-Baptiste.

After Mikael Silvestre was lost for the season with a knee injury, Jean-Baptiste was forced back into the starting lineup. He was caught out on multiple plays and seemed to struggle in individual matchups with Ferreira and Perez. Unfortunately for Dallas, Ferreira was subbed out just after the second half restart with an apparent hamstring injury.

Dallas almost took the full three points, but Kenny Cooper’s blast in the 86th minute, was denied by a diving Ricketts. Ricketts delivered another standout performance for the club with the penalty kick being his only blemish.

Not to be outdone by his Jamaican counterpart, Raul Fernandez delivered numerous saves as well including a fingertip save that sent a Frederic Piquionne shot into the post. However, Fernandez was unable to stop Nagbe’s goal, which was set up the Timbers substitute Rodney Wallace.

Wallace, who had come on a sub just seven minutes earlier, worked his way around Je-Vaughn Watson and put a cross into the far post. Nagbe got a foot to it and beat the sprawling Fernandez.

Despite being unable to get the win, Porter was happy with his club’s effort.

“We’re a group that just refuses to lose. They roll their sleeves up every game and they don’t quit. They fight and they work for each other,” Porter said.

The draw combined with the Montreal Impact’s loss to the New York Red Bulls, leaves Dallas and Portland as the only MLS teams that have just one loss. It was, however, the first time in 2013 that FC Dallas was unable to win a home match. Portland remains as the only MLS team that hasn’t yet lost on the road.

Next up for Portland is a Mother’s Day matchup with Chivas USA at Jeld-Wen Field, while Dallas will be back at home Saturday night to take on DC United.

July = Soccer

by DFE

DFE,

This July is going to be one of the most exciting soccer months that we have had since the World Cup. With the World Cup 1 year away, this will be a great month to remind everyone that July = Soccer!

Below is a list of all the soccer matches and details for the Month of July. Do yourself a favor, do as much as you can with this schedule, and embrace the greatness that is soccer.

ARE YOU READY!?

Sunday June 30th – Confederations Cup Final

Sadly, the USA is not playing in this years Confederations cup. However there are still a lot of great countries that are playing in this World Cup ess warm up tournament in Brazil. The last tournament was played in South Africa in 2009. Brazil are the defending Confederations cup champions, with the United States as the runner up, when Brazil defeated the USA 3-2 in the Championship final. The Confed Cup will start on June 15th, and will be broadcasted on ESPN.

Wednesday July 4th – FC Dallas vs. Chivas USA

The FC Dallas 4th of July match is always a huge selling match regardless of how the club is playing. In this case, you can expect our talented squad to be looking for revenge against the only club that has beaten them through their first 9 matches. Chivas is a contender this year and will come in looking to remain in the playoff hunt. Expect FC Dallas to be in the hunt for the supporters shield. This match comes complete with the best fire work show in town! You will want to attend this match!

For tickets in 103 aka the Snake Pit, contact Keith Uhles at kuhles@fcdallas.net

Sunday July 7th – FC Dallas vs. LA Galaxy AWAY

Anytime we play the LA Galaxy it’s a big match. Last time we played LA, our Keeper Raul Fernandez blocked a Landon Donovan penalty, and then our very own George John scored the game winner in the 87th minute. This gave LA their only loss on the season thus far. LA will be looking for a little revenge in this match! Expect a battle between first and second place!

However, RSL will bring a strong squad in and will be looking to get revenge after they lost earlier this season in Dallas.

Tuesday July 16th – United States v. Costa Rica – 7 pm CT (Gold Cup)

Regardless of what we think, Costa Rica has declared the USA public enemy #1. Apparently, the USA used all of their tricks in the Denver world cup qualifier, and were able to make a blizzard come. Costa Rica soccer federation has now tried to change their stadium venue that will host the USA in our September world cup qualifier. This change is so that the USA players will have to face hostile, possibly dangerous fans, in order to give Costa Rica an advantage. Well before that match happens, Costa Rica will come up to play the USA in this 3rd and final group match. Most likely the USA and Costa Rica will be fighting for that #1 slot. This will go a long way in determining when we will face Mexico.

AO Dallas meets at the Staggering Irishman in Plano. Come out and support the USA with the greatest US Soccer supporters in the country!

HUGE MATCH WEEK!

by DFE

DFE!!

This week our first place FC Dallas will take on Portland and D.C. United! This is a very important week that can continue our dominance, or allow those clubs chasing us to catch up. FC Dallas is undefeated at home, and I promise you that the supporters, and the atmosphere, we have helped to create gives FC Dallas the home field advantage they need!

What do we need from you!?

We need you to help us on this first Wednesday match of the year! We get Wednesdays are tough days to attend matches, but we need you all out in full force for this one! Portland is sitting in 3rd place in the Western conference and a win over us would close the gap on our lead. This is a big match, because if we defeat Portland and claim the 3 points, we will give ourselves a 9 pt gap heading into Saturday’s match vs. D.C. United. Right now FC Dallas is tied with the NY Redbulls on the most goals scored in the league, 15. However we have given up 9 goals through 9 matches. Once again, our home field advantage is showing though. We have scored more home goals then any other team in MLS.

Do yourself a favor. Look at your schedule and clear it for Wednesday and Saturday!

Is FC Dallas in trouble with the injuries?

by DFE

419192_10151229954221152_1486176102_n

The standings show FC Dallas well in control of the Western Conference race at the moment, and last night’s 2-2 draw in Vancouver looks like an adequate result at first glance. The Texans are unbeaten in their last seven, and they have collected 20 of a possible 27 points to begin 2013.

There are exactly 18 other clubs that would take that right now. Believe it.

But there is plenty of reason to fret today for Red Stripe faithful. Yes, you have our permission to fret.

Two players quite key to the operation around FC Dallas Stadium went off injured last night. First wentAndrew Jacobson (pictured), who has combined so well with Brazilian midfielder Michel in the dual holding roles. Then went George John, who captains my personal All-Underrated Team of 2013.

If you don’t think George is important to the cause, consider this little bit, stunning and telling all at once: This is the second time that George has gone off at halftime, and the club fumbled away two goal leads each time. (That includes a match in Toronto and last night’s draw at BC Place.) As much as Blas Perez’s scoring and David Ferreira’s playmaking does for FC Dallas, there is a surely case to be made that John is the most important man for Schellas Hyndman’s team.

All of this underscores an important, larger point for the West leaders: this was always their Achilles heel. While Dallas was surely deep at striker and goalkeeper, they were always thin across the midfield and at center back.

I spoke to Ugo Ihemelu two weeks ago, and the veteran center back is nowhere near getting past those unfortunate concussion-related issues, so there’s no veteran cover there. In the midfield, don’t forget thatPeter Luccin, signed by the club in the off-season specifically for central mid duties, is out for the year with a knee injury.

The one silver lining: Dallas is idle for the coming weekend before getting Portland in mid-week on May 8.
